Name numerology calculator

Every letter has a number. Add them in three different ways and your name gives three readings: what you can do, what you want and how you come across.

Use your full birth name for the core numbers.

How your name becomes three numbers

The Pythagorean chart lays the alphabet out in rows of nine, so each letter takes the number of its column. Your name is then read three ways.

Switch between all letters, vowels and consonants on the board to watch each total build. Toggle the Y rule, and flip to the Chaldean system to see how an older, sound-based chart gives different values to the same name.

Expression number

4 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 5 + 3 + 9 + 1 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 2 + 5 + 9 = 65 → 11

Every letter counts: expression, also called destiny, is read as your natural talents.

Expression, soul urge and personality

Expression, also called the destiny number, is the sum of every letter. Numerologists read it as your natural toolkit: the abilities you were born with and the direction they point.

Soul urge, or heart’s desire, adds only the vowels. Vowels are the open, voiced sounds of a name, and this number is read as private motivation: what would make you feel fulfilled.

Personality adds only the consonants and is read as the outer layer, the first impression you make before people know you.

Name and birth date together

Your name gives three numbers, and your birth date gives the life path, which is read as the most important of all. Put both into the full numerology reading to see the whole chart, including the maturity number (life path plus expression).

Curious about the older system? The Chaldean calculator uses a different letter chart and reads the unreduced total as well. Totals of 13, 14, 16 or 19 on the way down are read as karmic debt numbers.

Questions people ask

How is a name converted into numbers?

In the Pythagorean system the alphabet is written in rows of nine: A–I are 1–9, J–R are 1–9 and S–Z are 1–8. Each letter takes its column number. Add the values and reduce the total by adding its digits, keeping 11, 22 and 33.

What is the difference between expression, soul urge and personality?

Expression (or destiny) uses every letter and is read as your talents and potential. Soul urge (or heart’s desire) uses only the vowels and is read as your inner motivation. Personality uses only the consonants and is read as the impression you give.

Is Y a vowel in numerology?

Traditions differ. A common rule is that Y counts as a vowel when it is the only vowel sound in a syllable (as in Lynn or Bryan) and as a consonant when it sits next to another vowel (as in Maya or Yolanda). Use the toggle to see both.

Should I use my birth name or my current name?

Core numbers use the full name on your birth certificate. Your current name, a married name or a nickname can be calculated too; numerologists read it as the energy you carry now, layered on top of the birth-name numbers.

Can changing my name change my numbers?

It changes the numbers of the new name, which is why some people choose spellings or stage names with particular totals. Traditional numerologists still treat the birth name as the underlying blueprint.
