Life path number calculator

The life path is the number numerologists weigh most heavily. It comes from your full date of birth and is read as the main theme of your life.

Pick your date and the number appears here. The steps are shown below.

How the reduction works

Numerology reduces numbers by adding their digits: 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11, and 1992 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, then 3. You keep going until one digit is left, unless you hit 11, 22 or 33. Those are the master numbers and they are left as they are.

Step through the example date, 24 November 1985, on the board. Then switch method: “add every digit” is how some older calculators do it, and on dates like this one it hides a master number.

Why do both methods nearly always agree? Adding digits never changes a number’s remainder when divided by 9, so any route to a single digit ends in the same place. Only the stopping rule for 11, 22 and 33 can differ.

Step 1 of 6

Write the date as three parts

Month, day and year are kept apart. This is the method most modern numerology books teach, because it lets master numbers in any part survive.

For this date the two methods disagree: 22 by parts, 4 by adding every digit. That happens when a master number shows up in one method and not the other.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits (keeping 11, 22 and 33), add the three results, then reduce the total the same way. For 14 July 1992: month 7; day 1+4 = 5; year 1+9+9+2 = 21 → 3. Then 7 + 5 + 3 = 15 → 6. Life path 6.

What is the rarest life path number?

The master numbers are the least common, and 33 is usually considered the rarest: the reduced month, day and year must add up to exactly 33 (for example 22 September 1982: 9 + 22 + 2). Many calculators that add every digit at once never show 33 at all.

Why is my life path different on another website?

Calculators use different reduction methods. Adding every digit at once and reducing parts first give the same single digit, but only the parts method preserves master numbers that appear in the month, day or year. The stepper on this page lets you compare both.

What are master numbers?

11, 22 and 33. Numerologists treat these doubled digits as carrying extra intensity, so they are not reduced. Many readers also look at the reduced digit (11 → 2, 22 → 4, 33 → 6) as the everyday expression of the master number.

What is a karmic debt life path?

If the reduced month, day and year add up to 13, 14, 16 or 19 before the final reduction, the life path is written as 13/4, 14/5, 16/7 or 19/1 and is read as carrying a karmic debt: a specific lesson attached to the number. The karmic debt calculator checks this for you.

Which life path numbers are compatible?

A common rule of thumb groups 1, 5 and 7; 2, 4 and 8; and 3, 6 and 9 as natural matches. Try the compatibility calculator for a pair-by-pair reading.
